How To Get Performance Proficiency

Baldur's Gate 3 character creation screen- bard with entertainer background

To be able to play an instrument, you'll need to have proficiency in Performance. There are a couple of ways to achieve this:

  • Choosing a Bard in character creation will grant you this, and you'll also get to choose what instrument you want to play.
  • If you don't want to be a Bard, you can choose the Entertainer background. This will also allow you to start the game with Performance proficiency.
  • Help Alfira with her song, which we'll cover further down.

Even if you don't want to charm crowds through song, the skill can be helpful in other ways. For example, you'll be better at persuading people. You can also take the performer Feat when you hit level four.

How To Help Alfira With Her Song

If you don't choose the Entertainer background or start as a Bard, there is another way you can gain proficiency in Performance. Go East of the Druid's Grove. There is a dirt path, go along until (X:281, Y:496), where you'll find a Tiefling woman named Alfira s༒inging and strumming a lute. Her bright hair and clothes make her a dead giveaway.

When you talk to her, she will tell you she's struggling to write a song. If you offer to help her, she'll let you use her extra lute to play with her. If you choose to do so, you'll have to pass two Performance checks. The first is a DC 15, and the second is a DC 10.

If you pass both, you'll gain proficiency in Performance, and Alfira will let you keep the lute. You're now armed with everything you need to start making extra money on top of your adventuring.

How To Profit With Music

Take your instrument out while in a crowd and start playing. NPCs will flock to you to listen to you play. If you keep it up long enough, they will toss money at you, but the coin won't be anything substantial.

That's why you have to choose your venues carefully. You need to bring in large crowds in order to profit well. While your friends at camp may be entertained by your musical exploits, they won't pay you much.

As you play, you'll make continuous Performance checks. Failing may cause you to lose your audience.

If you feel like you're not making enough money the honest way, you can use your musical skills to distract the crowd while Astarion picks pockets and opens chests.
