The actual Game Awards will take place on December 7. We have to remember that these are just nominations, so no awards are guaranteed for either Alan Wake 2 or Baldur's Gate 3 just yet. However, we shouldn't expect their developers to go home empty-handed, especially after they've already found some award-show success. Both games are among the best-reviewed this year too, so it's not surprising to see them neck and neck like this, even if they are pretty different experiences.
It's hard to predict what way the GOTY category will go. While Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 could easily take the prize, you've also got The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was an instant classic as soon as it launched. Resident Evil 4 is another game that managed to hold onto relevancy long after its release, sticking in the minds of the Game Awards' jury long enough to make it onto the list. It will be a fierce competition, for sure, but a varied one, with so many different genres represented in the final six. Even if it's left some glaring snubs, like the much-loved Final Fantasy 16.
