Here's how to get Legendary Jokers in Balatro.

But, ꦯBalatro’s 20 challenges 💮force you to rethink the game and its Jokers. It makes you see some Jokers in a different light where, under the right circumstances, they become invaluable to the success of your run. Knowing what to look for is half the battle, so here are some tips to help you with three of Balatro’s trickiest challenges.

What Are Challenges In Balatro?

After you’ve won a run with five different decks, Challe🍎nge Mode becomes available for you. It adds additional rules, restrictions, and unique deck modifications that act as new puzzles and offer fresh ways to play and think about Balatro.

All undiscovered cards - Jokers, Planets, Tarot Cards, Spectral Cards, and Vouchers - cannot be discovered and added to your collection during a challenge run.

The first five challenges are available to you once the mode is unlocked. Every successfully completed challenge unlocks a new one, until all 20 challenges are available to you. All challenges are played on White Stake difficulty, the base difficulty of the game.

Challenge 5: X-ray Vision

At first glance, this challenge doesn’t seem so bad. There’s only one custom rule: one in four cards are drawn face down. But this challenge sneaks up on you, becausꦡe Balat🎃ro is a game of information, and this challenge conceals so much of it from you. Here are some things to keep in mind for this one.

Sort The Order Of Cards In Your Hand

By default, Balatro organizes the cards in your hand by Rank, or the numerical value of the card. From left to right, Rank is sorted from Aces to 2s. You can reorder your hand by Suit instead, which is the color or symbol of the card. From left to right, Suits are sorted by Spades, Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds.

Then, within each of the sorte☂d Suits, cards follow the Rank order of, left to right, Aces to 2s. By swapping between sorting by Rank and Suit, you can narrow down what the face-down cards in your hand might be.

In the above video, the two face-down cards are between 10 and 6, so their Ranks can be anything between, including 10 and 6. It could be two other 10s, even. When sorted by S🐟uit, the face-down card on the right moves to the left of the 10 of hearts.

In rank order, only Jack, Queen, King, and Ace could be left of 10, so this face-down card must be a Spade, because Spades are left of Hearts in suit order. The other face-down card is between the 10 and 3 of Hearts, confirming it’s something of Hearts. If the goal𝄹 here is playing a Heart Flush, now you know which card to keep and which 🍌to discard.

Avoid Jokers That Provide Score For Playing A Specific Rank

Jokers like Even Steven, Odd Todd, and Walkie Talkie can be tricky to work with in this challenge when you don’t always know the Rank of the cards in your hand. If you’re able to fix your deck enough that it’s mostl𒀰y Aces, and Aces are sorted to the left of your hand anyway, then you could consider running Scholar or Fibonacci.

More general jokers like Abstract Joker, Red Card, and Gros Michel (and eventually Cavendish), that can provide score regardless of the hand or cards you play, will prove more useful in this challenge.

Challenge 10: Double Or Nothing

A handful of challenges alter the starting deck in some way. In Double or Nothing, every single card in the deck has a Red Seal already. Red Seals make a card retrigger, effectively playing it twice in a single hand.

Retriggers become very valuable when you have jokers and card-specific enhancements that provide score when a card is triggered. However, the custom rule in Double or Nothing is: all played cards become debuffed after scoring.

Debuffed cards are not triggered when played in a scoring hand, but they can still be played to allow a hand to score. For instance, a debuffed 10 of clubs and a regular 10 of diamonds will still sc෴ore a Pair, but only🌱 the 10 of diamonds will be triggered and counted towards your score.

Rebuff Your Cards!

Luckily, you can rebuff your debuffed cards! By enhancing a debuffed card with a Tarot card like Empress or Hierophant to give a card an additional effect, it renews the card and allows it to be scored again. Changing a card’s Suit with a Tarot card does not count, but enhancing a card wi✅th a Lovers Tarot card to make it Wil🎶d, or function as any suit, does count!

Because you’re able to rebuff your valuable red seal cards, a steady supply of tarot cards is the key to beating this challenge. Jokers like Vagabond, Cartomancer, Hallucination, and even 8 Ball are 🌠good ways to keep… flush… with Tarot cards. But be wary of 8 Ball in particular, as a debuffed 8 wi♏ll not trigger for 8 Ball’s effect. You have been warned.

Challenge 15: Monolith

The Monolith challenge doesn’t have any rules or changes to the base 52-card deck. You simply begin the run with a Negative Eternal Marble Joker, which adds one stone card to your deck for every blind you play, and an Eternal Obelisk. Eternal Jokers cannot be sold or destroyed, so you're stuck with them.

These two don’t seem to have any sort of synergy together, so focus on the Joker with t🧔he most pote💦ntial: Obelisk.

Obelisk is tricky to work with. It reads: "This Joker gains X0.2 Mult per consecutive hand played without playing your most played poker hand." This Mult gets reset to 0 every time you play your most played poker hand. Making Obelisk work takes a reliable, progressive Mult adder, like Ride The Bus, Green Joker, or Fortune Teller.

Play Low-value Poker Hands At The Beginning Of The challenge

To get Obelisk’s Mult to work for you, play lower-value poker hands at the beginning of the run like High Card and Pair. The stone cards created by Marble Joker can help supplement low-value poker hands that don’t use all five cards to score. Buy decent early-game Jokers to help you beat the blinds for the first three antes. Use all൩ of your available hands on a low-value poker hand until you’ve played it ten or so times.

Since you’re stuck with Marble Joker adding stone cards to your deck for the entirety of the challenge, Stone Joker and Hologram are no-brainers if you happen to find them.

Play High-value Poker Hands And Keep Growing Obelisk’s Multiplier

Now, shift to a high-value poker hand like Four Of A Kind - ideally something you only need to play one of to beat the blind. In the first few antes, use Tarot cards like Death and Hanged Man to fix your deck to have꧒ more of a single rank, like Aces or face cards.

Playing other mid-value poker hands like F♑lushes, Full Houses, and Straights can help you keep the amount of high-value hands down in order to maintain Obelisk’s multiplier. Avoid playing your most played hand as much as you can, and Obelisk can carry you to victory.
