That might upset some people. I get it, you want to have the opportunity to kiss everyone. But I'm positing instead that this is a good thing -- most romance mechanics are subpar anyway, and are mostly reduced to 'do thing character likes, kiss character, happy ending'.
Romances don't have to be the only way to make a character matter to you. We don't have to have romantic relationships with our real life friends to be emotionally vulnerable and intimate with them, and it doesn't have to be that way in video games either.

While they were considered early in the game’s development, the developers decided not to include them so ܫt𝓰hat the team could focus on platonic relationships. That’s not a knock on Avowed in any way. I liked The Outer Worlds when I played it, and I appreciated that it was shorter because it still man🌊aged to pack lots of 🧜meaningful story into a smaller package.

Avowed creative director Carrie Patel said that for the team to include romances, there would have to be equally meaningful non-romantic paths, and that would have required more time and investment. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m pretty pleased that the team has chosen to focus more on friendships than romances, especially considering that most approval syste༒ms make it fairly rote to romance characters, and many romance storylines feel more like fan-service than they are meaningfuౠl to the overall narrative arc.

Romance Mechanics Kind Of Suck, In General

In the vast majority🌱 of RPGs I’ve played, I’ve ended up romancing characters more because I could rather than because I wanted to. The choices my chꦕaracter made gained the approval of certain other characters, making them interested in me romantically, and that’s simply because that’s how approval systems are meant to work.

You compliment them or flirt with them, do things they want you to do, maybe go on a date, maybe hook up, and that’s it. It🎉 never feels interesting or real, because the mechanics are always the same. Rarely will you find meet cutes, bickering, resentment or any kind of tension. You might learn more about a character you romance than one you don’t, but apart from potential sex scenes, that’s pretty much all you get from them. You pander to them, and they fall in love.

It feels pointless, really. While RPG characteཧrs are often complex and interesting, I can count the number of times on one hand that I’ve felt a romance arc made a character more interesting or multi-faceted.

Astarion is a good example of a romance arc building signific♚antly o꧂n a character.

Friendships Are Where It’s At

This might just be because of the way I view the world and the way I live my own life, but I’m far more interested in platonic friendships between characters than I am romantic relationships. I’m a bit of a relationship anarchist, and I see my close friendships as just as important as my romantic relationships. You will never catch me cancelling plans wi🍎th my friends to hang out with a partner, or vice versa, because every relationship in my life deserves equal commitment and attention.

A platonic friendship can be every bit as rich, complex, and fulfilling as a romantic relationship. Why wouldn’t it be? You don’t need to date your friends to value them and know them on a deep, intimate level. You do💙n’t need to pander to their every whim and opinion in order for them to see you for what you are, and love you for it. In real life, there’s great pleasure and beauty to be found in a new friend opening up and sharing their life with you, and it’s the same in games.

So, no, Avowed might not have romance, but that doesn’t mean its companions can’t be just as compelling and interesting. While it’s hard to say from what we’ve seen how good Avowed will actually be, I’m looking forward to getti💜ng to know its characters and forming my own varied relationships with them. I may not be able to kiss the fish man, but that’s fine. We can just hang out, and that’s enough for me.
