About Rachel Maybee
Rae Maybee is a freelance writer from Kentucky. She has an MA in Publishing and Professional Writing as well as a BA in Creative Writing, and if they gave out degrees for playing games, she'd have one o🙈f those, too. She's fascinated by the way꧑ storytelling, the dissemination of information, and politics intersect, and she's all about marrying the pragmatic and the creative. In her opinion, there's no better place for this than the interactive medium of gaming.
When she's not thinking about video games, crocheting, reading the latest horror novels, or falling into a new anime obsession, she's writing. Her pieces range from comedy to fantasy (and sometimes both). She's published work with Nat 1 Press, The Offing, Creepy podcast, Psychopomp, Into the Spine, 🌊and others. After all, forဣ as long as there've been people who can succumb to the curse of boredom, there've been entertainers. She hopes that, at the very least, you're entertained.

Favorite Games
When Rae was eight years old, her father got tired of buying her games marketed towards kids (which she flew through), and bought her a Legend of Zelda game. "Here," he said, handing it to her with 𒁏a look of pride, "this one will take yo🅷u longer than two days to beat."
And it did. In fact, from start to finish the game took her eight years to beat. It was The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. And, for kicking off what would become a lifelong habit, it's her favorite game. In her favorite series, to boot. It also became the standard by which, fair or not, she based every other game.
Speaking of, anyone remember kinstones? Man, Rae misse💝s kinstones.
Proudest Gaming Achievement
During the pandemic, Rae suddenly had a lot of indoor time. At the time she was teaching three classes and going to grad school, but this still left her weekends free. What to do? Well, she and her roommate had begun trying to challenge themselves to do things they weren't very good at. While this had meant activitie🐬s like juggling and swimming, they needed something more suited for the inside: platforming games. And what was the hardest co-op platformer they could find?
Cuphead. That's right. Rae's proudest achievement is beating the entire game without lowering the difficulty. How many times did she die? That's not important. Did it take them at least four hours to beat each level? Who can say. What matters is the moment that final screen came up and they felt such exhilaration they both started screaming so loud their respective partners came out to check on them. She's never felt more bonded with anyone.
Industry Focus
Currently, Rae is a list writer for The Gamer. She has two main focuses in the industry: She's concerned with the human element of gaming and the meta of its design. In other words, she's interested in how the interactive element of gaming plays out. How do communities form? How do people share their experiences with others? How do people experience, at all? Since games are built to be played, She's interested in what that playing looks like, and how it's anticipated and shaped by creators. Because of this, she specializes in co-op games.
H﷽ow do we turn games into memory? Or into poetry?
