One day, Ymir passed by the pig pen. She decided to release the pigs before walking away. However, King Fritz gathered all his slaves and demanded to know who released the pigs. The slaves readily pointed out Ymir, who, as punishment, was sent to the forest a꧂nd hunted down by Fritz's men for entertainment. Injured, Ymir stumbles upon a massive tree with an opening at its base.

Entering the tree, she slipped and fell into a lake, where a centipede-like anomaly resided. Dubbed the 'source of all living matter', it fused with Ymir. Likely responding to her fear of death and pain, Ymir emerged as the first Titan - the Founding Titan. Instead of using her power for revenge or to run away, Ymir returned to King Fritz. Ymir became his favoured slave, and Fritz used her Titan power to defeat Marley, conquer most of the world and establish the Eldian Empire.

Ymir eventually birthed three daughters for King Fritz: Maria, Rose, and Sina. At some point in time, during a show of surrender, a Marleyan captain attempted to assassinate Fritz by hurling a spear at him. Ymir took the blow, but instead of using her Titan powers to regenerate, she gave up her will to live and chose to die. However, her consciousness was transferred to the Paths, a metaphysical realm where all the Subjects of Ymir (descendants of Ymir who could turn into Titans) are connected, capable of changing and affecting them mentally and physiologically.

This is evidenced by the fact that 600 years after King Fritz, another Fritz monarch, used the Founder's power to change the biological makeup of his subjects to make them impervious to disease. In the Paths, Ymir continues to build Titan bodies, carrying out orders made by the inheritors of the Founding Titan. Every one of the Founder's inheritors was of royal blood, until the Founding𓆉 Titan power was stolen by Grisha Jaege𓄧r in 850.

The Inheritance Process

When Ymir did not return, King Fritz became desperate to keep the Power of the Titans in his grasp. He ordered his three daughters to cannibalise their mother's corpse to obtain her power, before commanding them to reproduce a🃏nd continue the same practice to ensure the Power of the Titans remaine📖d in the Fritz royal family.

Although all Subjects of Ymir could be turned into Titans, there are important differences that categorise them into two different groups.

Pure Titans

In use since the dawn of the Eldian Empire, Pure Titans are those who have lost their sense of humanity, becoming mindless, empty creatures who devour humans indiscr﷽iminately. They do the latter because they wish to regain their human form as well as sentience, which is why they consume any human i🌺n hopes that they will be a Titan Shifter.

This is demonstrated when Ymir - who had been a Pure Titan for 60 years - devoured the Warrior Marcel Galliard, who was the Jaw Titan. Ymir became thꦏe new Jaw Titan, able to return to her human self.

Aside from their unquenchable thirst for human blood, Pure Titans are noted for ignoring wildlife and being inactive during nighttime. After some time, Titans would regurgitate the people they'v🐟e devoured whole, not even digesting them as they have no digestive system. Their reaction to pain also varies: some feel nothing at all, while others scream.

Moreover, there is even a special subset of Pure Titans known as Abnormals (or Aberrants). This type of Pure Titan is known for its unpredictable behaviour and strange movements. We see this through Porco Galliard, who, after sustaining heavy damage to h🍌is body when in Titan form, could not regenerate half of his head due to running out of energy during Marley's surprise attack on Paradis.

Moreover, new inheritors of any of the Nine Titans are able to peer into the memories of past inheritors. The Attack Titan has the unique ability that allows them to see not only the past, but the memories of future inheritors.

However, it's noted that if someone of royal blood possesses one of the other eight Titans aside from the Founder, it allows them an extra unique characteristic.
