Spring is in full bloom, as our allergies can attest. What bette🌠r way to beat the pollen than to hang out inside all day and play video games? April brought a slew of big-name and indie titles, with some surprising hits and unfortunate misses.
In our ongoing monthly feature, we take a l🌺ook at some of last month’s biggest games as ranked by Metacritic score.
7. Days Gone
Metacritic Score: 72/ User Score: 8.0
Bend Studio's Days Gone was one of the most-anticipated upcoming zombie games since it was announced at E3 2016. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 4-exclusive just didn’t quite live up to the hype. A decent story is brought down by characters that are hard to believe, not to mention the bugs and audio issues that plagued the✤ game at launch. It’s one of those games that players will either love or hate. A new Survival mode is slated✨ to come to the game in June, which could bring some fun new gameplay dynamics, but overall, Days Gone provided little 🐠more than 𒅌a middle-of-the-road experience.
6. God’s Trigger
Metacritic Score: 80 (Averaged across platforms) /𓆉 User Score: 8.3 (Averaged across platforms)
One More Level's God’s Trigger is a fast-paced, top-down shooter that focuses on one thing more than anything else: violence. Stop th💮e impending apocalypse by taking out enemies in the most graphic and bloody ways possible with over-the-top weapons, abilities, and explosions. The game can be played solo or co-op, allowing you to 💯tear through levels with a havoc-wreaking partner. God’s Trigger is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC.
5. BoxBoy! + BoyGirl!
Metacritic Score: 81/ User Score: 7.8
Jump, climb, drift, ride, and warp your way through over 270 obstacle-filled levels i༒n BoxBoy! + BoyGirl!, which is available to play on the Nintendo Switch. T🌞he game can be played alone or with a friend to get through all of the puzzles you’ll encounter along the way. BoxBoy! + BoyGirl! Also features a few🍬 different game modes that are sure to keep you entertained while on-the-go.
4. Anno 1800
Metacritic Score: 81 / User Score: 7.9
Blue Byte's Anno 1800 is a city-building strategy game thatܫ puts players in the heart of the industrial revolution of the 19th-century. Citizens and artisan vendors work together (or not, depending on your reign) to centralize production and economics. Ultimately, it’s up to each player to decide how they define the world that they create. A Story mode is available along with a Sandbox and Multiplayer mode, allowing players to truly create the 19th-cen🧔tury city of their dreams. Although the learning curve is a little bit of a hurdle, Anno 1800 is certai☂nly worth 𝕴checking out for fans of the genre. Anno 1800 is available now on PC.
3. Mortal Kombat 11

It’s one thing to have a franchise have as ꧋long of a run as Mortal Kombat has had. It’s quite another when t💖he franchise continues to churn out great titles wi𓆏thin the series. Mortal Kombat 11 is just the latest entry into the franchise to provide exciting gameplay along with a surprisingly well-executed time travel story. The game’s Towers of Time mode received widespread fan criticism, which NetherRealm was quick to act on. The studio is currently battling employee claims of toxicity, which will likely drag o🅠n for a while. Nevertheles♊s, Mortal Kombat 11 is defi𒁃nitely a title that newcomers and veterans to the series should check out. 2. Yuppie Psycho
Metacritic Score: 83 / User Score: 7.8
Indie game Yuppie Psycho might be May’s most intriguing title. The genres of Survival Horror, Graphic Adventure, and Puzzle-solving combine to create a unique adventure that takes players through the trials and tribulations of (lit♌erally) surviving their first days at a new job. 16-bit graphics and cutscenes of a dystopian society (inspired by games such as Silent Hill and Deadly Premonition) add to the game’s intrigue. If that’s no⭕t enough to convince you to check it out, the game is currently available on for the price of $16.66. W♎e’ll let you decipher those numbers for yourself. 1. Katana Zero
Metacritic Score: 83 (Averaged across platforms) / User ♐Score: 7.5 (Averaged across platforms)
Not only is Katana Zero April’s highest-rated game on Metacritic, it is also currently sitting at a 10/10 rating on Steam, which is a feat in and of itself. The game is a neo-noir, action-platformer that focuses on fast-paജced action, with players taking on the role of an assassin who uses his blade and environmental traps to take out enemies. Katana Zero is available for PC, but an ideal title for t༺🔥he Nintendo Switch.
