🅺 Ace Attorney: Every Game In T𝔉he Series, Ranked

We won't accept any objections to our list.

Between the three games, there are a whopping 14 cases to crack (16 if you count the DLC cases, which have been bundled in at no extra cost), which each range anywhere from two hours to 12. That's a lot of desk-pounding and finger-pointing; so if you're looking to jump right into the best chapters via the game's nifty new menu system, which ones should you pick?

As you might expect, this list is riddled with spoilers, both major and minor, for many of the most narrative-heavy cases in the trilogy.

10 🐟 Turnabout Academy

School's Out

Athena Cykes and a statue with a pink drape over it

Themis Legal Academy is the place to be if you're a budding lawyer. All the most famous defense attorneys and prosecutors attended it. In this chapter, Phoenix Wright himself is called in to deliver a speech to the prospective students. However, the event is cut short when a much-loved teacher, Constance Courte, turns up dead.

Turnabout Academy is significant in that it's the first full chapter of Dual Destinies where newcomer Athena gets the entire proceedings to herself. Turnabout Countdown, the tutorial, technically stars her, but she loses her nerve midway through, and Phoenix steals the spotlight. With that in mind, this is a breezy enough case to cut her teeth on, and it features some fun cameos from the likes of Klavier Gavin.

9 Turnabout Serenade ꦑ ♐

Rewind The Tapes, Apollo

Lamiroir prepares to sing on stage, someone holds a hun by a portrait of Lamiroir

Turnabout Serenade is probably the weakest case on offer in Apollo Justice; but given the game's overall consistency of quality, that's not saying much. Famed European singer Lamiroir is set to perform on stage with the Gavinners, but the concert goes awry when Klavier's guitar spontaneously combusts, and a bodyguard is shot in the dressing rooms.

How Many Cases Are In Each Ace Attorney 👍Game?

Wജe're on the case. We've counted every case in each Ace Attorney game to see exactly how many you'll need to solve over the series.

The central mechanic of this case is the (shockingly well-animated) videotape of the concert, which you'll need to rewind over and over during the trial to pinpoint oddities. It does turn things into a pixel hunt, sure, but it's a unique twist on the formula – ludicrous accusations about a child being able to handle a huge gun notwithstanding.

8 𒅌 Turnabout Reclaimed 🐠

Or 'On Lawyers Defending Piracy'

Phoenix points with a pirate beside him, Phoenix gets licked by a whale

Turnabout Reclaimed was originally a 3DS eShop exclusive chapter, so for a while after Nintendo shuttered the store, it was considered lost media. Thankfully, the trilogy resurrects it, and it's never looked better. Here, we follow Phoenix's first case after Edgeworth arranges to have his badge reinstated, and in typical Wright fashion, it concerns the defense of an orca.

Orla, a performing whale at a local aquarium, has been accused of chomping an employee to death. Resident pirate cosplayer Sasha Buckler insists she must be innocent, and so Phoenix and co. are on the job. It's definitely surreal seeing this aquatic creature take the stand via videolink; but hey, we've cross-examined parrots before!

7 Turnabout Succe൩ssion

Well, Not Quite

Gavin stands in court, Apollo and Trudy stand beside Mr. Hat

As the title makes explicitly clear, Turnabout Succession was intended to mark the point at which Phoenix would pass the torch to Apollo, succeeding him as the sole protagonist in future installments. In the end, Capcom decided Phoenix's spiky mug was too marketable, so he stuck around – but corporate cold feet can't prevent this from being a stellar finale.

The entire game has been building up Kristoph Gavin as a conniving mastermind, pulling many of the narrative strings. Unfortunately, he's a meticulous track-coverer, so it takes Phoenix and Apollo exploiting a loophole in the jury system to bring him down. Add countless familial revelations about Apollo and Trucy, and you have a genuine page-turner.

6 🦂 The Rite Of Turnabout

Maya Arrest #784

Maya Fey in jail in Phoenix Wright Spirit of Justice

Since she departed for the land of Khura'in to continue her spirit medium training at the end of Trials and Tribulations, fans have been clamoring to see what became of Maya. When Phoenix finally reunites with Fey Snr. in Spirit of Justice, both are overjoyed – for about 15 minutes- before she gets the cuffs slapped on her again.

There's m✅ore to the Ace Attorney franchise than 🍷slamming desks.

Oh, Maya; it's tradition at this point. This time, she's indicted with the murder of a local monk, Tahrust Inmee (yes, really), which took place atop a spiritual mountain. Phoenix has got to work within the tight constraints of Khura'inese law, as well as the Divination Seances, to clear her name.

5 🗹 Turnabout Countdown

Tick, Tick, Boom

Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney Dual Destinies

Capcom needed to kick off the 3D era of Ace Attorney in style, and Dual Destinies' Turnabout Countdown does it with a bang – literally. It's an anomaly within the franchise in that it actually takes place near the end of the story chronologically before we leap backward to see the cases that led up to i🐠t.

It's the 'dark age of the law,' and courthouses are being bombed left, right, and center. Apollo is unlucky enough to get caught in one such blast, so while he's out for the count, up steps Athena to have a go. Sadly, the prosecution's heckling gets to her, and she bows out so Phoenix can make his grand re-entry. It's an adrenaline-pumping intro.

4 🐻 The Magical Turnabout

It Happens To All Assistants Eventually

Ace Attorney: Split image of Apollo Justice and Trucy Wright

One character who we didn't get to spend nearly enough time with on her debut is Trucy, the adoptive daughter of Phoenix. Apollo Justice was mostly spent establishing how she actually came to live at the law office and less about the girl herself. Spirit of Justice addresses 𓄧this b꧑y giving her a chapter entirely centered around her, The Magical Turnabout.

The only downside? She's the accused. Following in the grand Maya tradition, Trucy apparently skewers a performer during one of her magic shows and is immediately banged up for it. Apollo takes her case, and it soon becomes clear there are greedy corporate forces manipulating events from behind the scenes. Trucy's an adorable presence, Apollo and Athena work marvelously off one another, and the theatrical setting is colorful.

3 Turnabout For Tomorrow 🍰

Fresh Twists, Get Your Twists Here

Bobby Fulbright salutes, Apollo stands by his friend Terran

If we were ranking these cases based on the🐷 sheer density of "oh my God, what?!" moments, Turnabout For Tomorrow would be at the top. Fittingly so – this is the finale chap𝓰ter of Dual Destinies, a game that otherwise spends a lot of its runtime meandering between unrelated narrative threads, so that this one works as splendidly as it does is a marvel.

Who is Apollo Justice, and why is he important to the Ace Attorney ser💃ies?

Apollo's dear childhood friend Clay Terran has been killed. And though he won't admit it, Apollo suspects Athena, as all the evidence and timelines appear to point to her. It's an intriguing dynamic, seeing the usually cheerful Apollo become bitter and reserved. Things worsen when it seems Athena may also have been responsible for her own mother's death! In the end, international spy 'The Phantom' is unmasked as the culprit in a conspiracy dating back a decade.

2 🌊 Turnabout ♓Trump

Tips Its Hand Early

Phoenix Wright from Apollo Justice Ace Attorney

Turnabout Trump is, simply put, the best opening case in the entire Ace Attorney catalog. Riveting, perfectly-paced storytelling blends with the mystique of how Phoenix ended up a bum playing mediocre piano tunes in a dive bar, and it all culminates in a soaring climax that sees you topple the game's central antagonist right out of the gate.

Phoenix is on trial for the murder of one Shadi Enigmar, and after picking apart the testimony of assorted fishy waiting staff, Apollo's mentor Kristoph Gavin is fingered as the perpetrator. What makes Turnabout Trump so great is that it's recontextualized by later events – Shadi isn't who he said he was, Kristoph took the L on purpose, and so on.

1 🤪 Turnabout 🅷Revolution

Casually Bringing Down An Autocracy

Apollo points at Nahyuta and a clue to the case

If Turnabout Trump is the best opener in the series, then our top-ranking case, Turnabout Revolution, is among the finest closers. Khura'in is a nation in disrepair, with the former queen indisposed and a corrupt, warmongering couple assuming the throne in her place. Rebellion from the Defiant Dragons is imminent and could escalate into armed conflict.

It all comes down to poor Apollo, then, who must prove the presiding monarch Ga'ran has no claim to rule. Turnabout Revolution is a tale of two acts: the first half is in the USA, where a civil trial over ownership of a Fey heirloom goes down. This seemingly irrelevant trinket proves indispensable to the second half – it's revealed to be a priceless Khura'inese spirit-channelling artifact that Ga'ran is unable to use, invalidating her authority.
