Players just getting started in the world of Athla will have a lot to learn, but you can make sure that your first few campaigns go smoothly with these tips. Whether you need help managing your economy or aren't sure how to build a powerful army, we've got everything you need and more right here!

Save Gold, Spend Mana

a goblin ruler on the victory screen of age of wonders 4

Your two primary resources in Age Of Wonders 4 are Gold, which is used to build structures and recruit units, and Mana, which powers your spells. No matter how you plan to win your current game, you're going to have to spend lots of each in order to make that happen.

Unlike in many other 4X games, buildings and units require an up-front Gold cost before you can start constructing or training them. You can also spend a lump sum to complete a city's current project immediately. This makes it very easy to go through your entire treasury in a single turn if you aren't careful!

If and when you need to recruit a new Hero or start recruiting high-Tier units, you're going to need money in the bank. For that reason, it's best to save your Gold until you need it; resist the temptation to spend it right away!

Mana, on the other hand, is pretty plentiful unless you're playing a summon-heavy build. It's almost impossible to run out of Mana on early-game spells, so by the time you get to the more expensive options you'll have a healthy reserve. Spells are what win battle💧s and campaigns, so put all that Mana to good use!

Have Multiple Armies Travel Together

an army of four stacks in age of wonders 4

Each army can have only six units, regardless of their type or Tier. However, when a battle starts, all armies within two tiles of the attacked space will participate! By keeping your armies together in medium-to-large groups, you'll be able to handle any threat that comes their way.

The AI tends to send three or four full-size armies into the field when they're committed to a war, so you'll need plenty of units to match their forces. Traveling in groups also lets your soldiers gang up on neutral Marauders, earning rewards with a significantly reduced risk. Best of all, the more units participate in a victorious battle, the🍷 more units will gain Ranks!

Use Province Features To Double-Dip

a Forester with Pastures in Age Of Wonders 4

Whenever a city annexes a nearby province, it usually gets a bonus to only one of its yields (Food, Knowledge, and so on). However, provinces with resource nodes provide their bonus regardless of the type of province improvement you build over them!

For example, if you annex a Mana Node, which grants an extra ten Mana per turn to its city, you might be tempted to build a Conduit for an impressive fifteen total Mana. Instead, consider building a Research Station on that Mana Node instead - you'll still get the ten Mana, along with a Knowledge boost to speed up your research!

This "double-dip" approach helps keep your economy balanced, ensuring that you don't fall behind in any categories as the game progresses.

Vassals Make Great Border Guards

an army masses outside the vassal city of Flotsam in Age of Wonders 4

Age Of Wonders 4 uses a city cap mechanic to limit the total number of settlements that a player can directly control. In most games, you probably won't end up owning more than six cities at most; the rest willl serve as Vassals, providing you with a percent🔯age of their income and letting you periodically recru♚it their soldiers via the Rally of the Lieges.

Vassals tend to keep their troops within their own borders, even the ones that you gift to them. While they won't help you conquer any new territory, their defense-oriented stance makes Vassals a great way to protect yourself from an aggressive neighbor. If an enemy has to march through your Vassal's territory in order to reach you, the Vassal will attack them as they pass through, weakening or even destroying the enemy army without you having to lift a finger!

Build Your Victory Provinces Close Together

the Age of Chaos victory spell in progress in Age of Wonders 4

The Expansion and Magic victory conditions require you to build and protect three powerful monuments. Once they're activated, your opponents will do everything they can to destroy them before your victory timer runs out. That can be a problem in multiplayer, but AI Rulers aren't usually coordinated enough to reach a decently-protected monument.

Even if the other Rulers don't come after you, though, Marauder armies will spawn to attack your victory provinces. If you have a large empire (which you certainly do if you're building the Beacons of Unity for an Expansion Victory) it's best to keep the monuments together. That way you don't have to send armies marching halfway across your realm to defeat the Marauders; instead, you can just wait with your full force near all three objectives and smash any armies that spawn.
